New Miss Minnesota is first Lao-American to hold title

As far as Minnesota firsts go, this one might not have been on your radar.

The state will send an Asian-American to the Miss USA pageant next year.

Nitaya Panemalaythong, 26, of Savage was crowned Miss Minnesota last month. The office worker and Normandale College student is the first Asian-American to win the honors, according to pageant producers.

Panemalaythong, whose family is from Laos, was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. In 1986, she moved to the United States as an infant. Her family lived in Minneapolis and North Carolina.

Her bio says her proudest achievement was buying a house last year. Why?

"She and her brother in law support 10 family members, living in that home," the bio says.

Panemalaythong was at first skeptical about entering the pageant, and at 26, she was the oldest contestant in the competition, the Savage Pacer reports.

Vientiane beauty wins Miss Laos contest

Thidalad Vongsili, 19, couldn't stop her eyes from welling up with tears when she heard she had been crowned Miss Laos 2011.
Ms Thidalad Vongsili is all smiles after being crowned Miss Laos 2011.
The contest played out at the Don Chan Palace hotel in Vientiane on Monday evening, before a packed hall of keen-eyed spectators.
The young woman, identified as contestant M14, becomes the third Miss Laos, with the relatively new competition being held previously in 2009 and 2010.
Ex-Miss Laos 2010, Malaythip Singsahanath, was on hand to pass on the mantle, presenting Thidalad with the crown.
The delighted winner was also presented with a congratulatory sash by Lao Women's Union Vice President Ms Chantheum Latmany, after she also took out the Miss Healthy Skin title.

Thidalad is a student at the Rattana Administration and Business College. The statuesque young beauty, who is 1.7 metres tall and weighs 52kg, won the judges' hearts with her poise, grace and natural beauty, and also wowed television audiences around the country.
The judges were impressed with her endearing, polite and confident manner on stage and also her excellent knowledge of the Asean Community and countries in the Mekong region.
Crowned as the most beautiful woman in Laos, Thidalad was awarded prize money of around 100 million kip as well as some exquisite gold jewellery.
She said she and her family were immensely proud to be bestowed with the honour, and she pledged to use her new found profile to promote Lao culture and work for the benefit of society.
Thidalad is now considered a representative of Laos and will be an ambassador for Lao culture both at home and abroad.
The Miss Laos contest was originally conceived to help promote Lao customs and an appreciation of traditional culture, particularly in relation to traditions and dress, said the Director General of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism's Mass Culture Department, Mr Sipheng Vongpanya.
Second place went to Cheelapha Phomphakdee, contestant M19, who received awards for Miss Photogenic and Miss Public. Third place went to Thiphakasone Mixayboua, contestant M16. Phonemani Sida, M10, secured fourth place, while fifth place went to Phadthavong Chantavong, contestant M12. Souksakorn Phengsimeuang (M 1) was voted Miss Attractive, while Phonenita Meksavanh (M2) was crowned Miss Friendship.

Each special prize winner received five million kip.
